Women's Health - The Menopausal Transition

Homeopathy can help you sail through perimenopause

Menopause is a point in time 12 months after a woman's last period and signals the cessation of fertility. Perimenopause refers to the years leading up to that point, when the ovaries begin to produce less oestrogen, and women begin to notice changes in their monthly cycles and alongside may experience symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, sleep irregularities, hair loss etc.

Every woman experiences this transition differently. I entered into perimenopause at 52 years and my transition until menopause lasted four years. The first two years were a breeze and the last two years were somewhat more challenging to say the least! Having come out the other end I see how natural and empowering the process is inspite of the shaming that can sometimes happen; how sad it is that our society pathologises women's health and ageing to such an extent; how our well-being can get so compromised by the medical model; how very deep healing can happen if given the opportunity and space; and how wise our bodies are in reminding us through powerful processes such as this, that change is inevitable, resistance is futile and the way out of suffering is to surrender even deeper to life's mystical flow.

For my self-care and well-being, I was fortunate to have access to the wisdom, skills and experience of my own personal homeopath who provided me with constitutional treatment, nutritional advise and spiritual guidance. When my symptoms were at their most intense, I found that homeopathic remedies really helped to soothe and calm my being and I'm sure was one of the main reasons the duration was as swift as it was. I would always recommend seeing a professional homeopath as the prescribing is on such a deep level.

My top two remedies that I seem to most frequently prescribe at some point for women going through the menopausal transition are Sepia and Lachesis (bearing in mind homeopathy is prescribed wholistically taking account of the mental, physical and emotional constitution, medical history, miasmatic influences, ancestral traits, and more).

After 13 moons of no moon, I invited a group of 13 women to a coastal retreat to mark this threshold with me. I felt I deserved a medal by the point! Never underestimate the healing and transformative power of ritual, ceremony and community to mark life's mileposts.
